WORMS (Web of Things Reference-implementation for a Microservices-based Servient) investigated a set of open-source technologies, components, and tools to design and develop a reference implementation that would make it easier for industry to develop systems and applications compatible with the Web of Things standards defined by the W3C.

The heterogeneity of protocols and platforms is one of the main interoperability problems of the Internet of Things. The W3C Web of Things addresses this challenge with a set of standards; WORMS met the need to offer application developers a complete, operational reference model for building systems that comply with those standards.

The objectives of the project were:

  • To provide developers worldwide with a reference model for building any enterprise system compliant with the Web of Things.
  • To facilitate interoperability between systems and applications that work with IoT devices from different manufacturers.
  • To reduce maintenance costs and development times for applications that work with IoT devices.
  • To expand the ecosystem of digital enabling companies capable of offering Web of Things-based solutions for industrial digitization.

The areas around which WORMS was structured were:

  • Complete runtime environment: a fully functional W3C Web of Things runtime environment, with protocol bindings for HTTP, CoAP, WebSockets, and MQTT.
  • Two versions of the implementation: one for devices with greater processing capacity and another for devices with very limited capacity, in order to cover the widest possible variety of IoT systems.
  • Documentation for the community: definition and usage guide for the reference implementation, conceived as a meeting point for the developer community and a practical complement to the official W3C documentation.

CTIC developed the project, whose results led to a scientific publication in the journal Computer Communications and to an open-source framework.
